06|05|2016 - WEC SPA FRIDAY

The Spaniard Roberto Merhi confirmed today in qualifying what he had shown yesterday in the free practice for the second round of the World Endurance Championship (WEC). Merhi is starting from third position in his category and from 12th overall.

The qualifying for the WEC is different to other categories where each driver scores his own time. In this championship, two drivers qualify each car with the average time of their two best lap deciding the grid position. Actually Roberto was the second fastest of the whole session but after adding the time of his team mate, Matthew Rao, they are starting third.

Tomorrow, Saturday, the race will be held starting at 14:30. Roberto is the driver charged with taking the start at the wheel of the number 45 Manor car.

Roberto commented:

“We confirmed today the step forward from yesterday, scoring a very competitive time in qualifying. I was beaten only by Rene Rast, a works Audi driver, so I'm very happy as both the team and myself are taking our first steps in this category and with this kind of car. Rao also did a great job and even if we couldn't keep my second position we've got a lot of chances of fighting for the podium in tomorrow's race as Bradley has also shown during the whole weekend how fast he is. I think that we are a very balanced team of drivers, something that's crucial in this kind of race.”
